Some feel obliged to write downsomething… usually having to do with being more healthy and exercising. However, for the last few years my hubby and I have taken the time to reallythink about our goals for the new year, and we then send them to each other. This is our way of holding each other accountable to our goals and supportingone another.

I think this is a fabulous idea, and therefore I’m going totake it a step further and share my 2012 goals with all of you… therefore youtoo can hold me accountable and see how I’m doing.

2011 was a huge year for me. My husband and I moved into our own place indowntown Vancouver. I paid off half of my debts, continued to explore mybeautiful city, starting blogging for JugniStyle.com, assisted in the launch ofthe first ever Bhangra exhibit in Vancouver, helped coordinate the largestBhangra festival in Vancouver with VIBC, and I traveled through Spain andItaly. I was also diagnosed with an illness that took most of the year totreat, but I didn’t let that get in the way of me doing what I wanted to do.

Now for my 2012 Goals… don’t judge me, as they say you needto make realistic goals to make them count.

Exercise Regularly – By regularly I mean 3 times a week, Yoga, Pilates, Shredding, Dance & Weight Training. Also, I love biking in the summer.

Eat Healthy – I’m notorious for skipping out on breakfastand just having a cup of chai in the morning… I really want to focus on wakingup 10 min earlier each weekday and having a small breakfast before I rush outthe door… This in turn will help me speed up my metabolism which will help inmy overall goal of weight loss.

Loose Weight – Yes, every girl out there wants to looseweight, it just happens to be something that allows us to feel good aboutourselves… I've had a few issues with my Thyroid come up which has caused me to put on some weight, so I would be very happy with myself this year if I was able to loose10-15 lbs and tone up!

Blog Regularly – I want to commit myself to publishingbi-monthly posts on JugniStyle.com regarding fashion, arts, culture, food, and events taking place in Vancouver and monthly posts on my Photography blog at www.sukhighuman.ca

Professional Development – I’m so lucky to work at UBC. Oneof the perks of working there is the fact they provide you with tuitionwaivers, which means you can take courses for free. My first year at UBC Ispent learning the job, now I can focus on taking courses that will allow me toexcel at my job and building my portfolio. Also, being a free lancephotographer there is so much more I want to learn, so I’d like to take a fewmore workshops, specifically with a focus on lighting.

Volunteer – I strongly believe in volunteering to help makea difference in the community you live in. I’ve been blessed to be a Director, and Media Relations Manager of the non-profit organization, VIBC Society for seven years now. Ihope to continue to stay on and volunteer my services during the 2012 City ofBhangra Festival and to take on a few new projects that are starting to peak myinterest (Stay tuned).

Put down that Cell Phone– I find myself almost addicted tomy smart phone. When I’m not checking emails, tweeting or checking my news feedon facebook, I’m watching videos on YouTube, texting or playing Solitaire…(Iknow that sounds lame, but it’s one of my fave card games). This year I want tomake it a point not to be on my phone doing meaningless stuff. I want to spendthat time working on projects, catching up with friends, or spending QT with myhubby.

Support my Hubby – My hubby too is making his own set ofgoals for 2012. We also have some joint goals that we want to focus on thisyear. I want to be able to support him in his goals with encouraging words andhelp him track his progress. I think it’s also important we celebrate thesemilestones.

Spend Time With People I Want to Spend Time With – I hate tosay this, but I know a lot of people. There’s nothing wrong with that, howeverI believe spending quality time with the people that really mean something toyou is imperative, ie. Friends and Family. These relationships take work and one needs totake the initiative to make these interactions happen. I’m going to be more activein taking on that initiative.

Photography – A passion of mine, that has gone from hobby toa part-time profession. I would really like to dedicate more of my time to myphotography to continue to stay engaged. Photography allows me to be creative and this is one of my artistic outlets. My trip to Spain in 2011 inspired me…maybe that means I need to plan another trip? ;)

Travel – I get 6 weeks holidays, and my hubby only gets 3.Therefore planning our vacations together is going to take some work. Anotherthing is, because he’s just started a new job, he can’t take his 3 weeksvacation all together, which means 3 separate vacations. I’d like to takeanother 2-3 weeks to possibly leave the country and go somewhere else… we’llsee what’s in the cards.

Be Healthy – I’ve come across a few medical complications, and this year I really want to focus on getting healthy. I want to deal withwhat I need to deal with, get treated, and move on. I’d also like to startseeing a naturopath, eat super foods & take vitamins regularly.

Love – I want to keep doing the things that I love doing.Things that make me smile. Things that make me feel alive.

Bicker Less – My hubby and I have a great relationship, however we have a tendency to bicker like an old married, andwe’ve only been married for 2 years. I know this is normal, and not something we do in public however, 2012 is going to be the year we stopbickering and focus more on the loving.

Finances - I was very pleased on how my hubby and I managed our finances in 2011. 2012 is going to be the year we clear all of our debts (credit card/line of credits) and start saving for a down payment.

That's a lot of things to focus on 2012... but I feel they're fairly realistic goals. With your help and accountability, I'll surely accomplish them all. -SG

Declarations

Reflecting while in San Sebastian, Spain - July, 2011

Life truly is too short... And maybe I'm feeling a little sentimental as I reflect on this past year.

Not many people know, but during this past year I was diagnosed with an illness that has taken me almost an entire year to fully diagnose and treat. A year later, I sit here reflecting on the two major surgeries I've had and my final treatment which consists of spending another 48 hours in isolation in the hospital.

It definitely has been an interesting year, and this year has surely opened my eyes. I've always been a believer that life is too short, and you have to make the most of it. Heck, my grade 12 year book entry read something like, "Live Each Day as If It Were Your Last." Little did I know, these words would come to move me in an entire different way 15 years later.

I now have a new found zest for life. I want to live in the moment, even more now than before. I want to be the person I've always destined to be. I want to truly appreciate all those in my life, and ensure they know how much they really mean to me.

A dear friend gave me these DECLARATIONS to read out loud on a daily basis as I celebrated my 32nd Birthday. They mean a lot to me, and I will continue to review them, until they're etched in me. South Asian singers, dancers, independent film makers, actors, writers, producers, television hosts... you name it, and they’re making a name for themselves on the West Coast. So it was only a matter of time before Vancouver played homage to the film industry with the very first Vancouver South Asian Film Festival, or VISAFF for short.

Vancouver based actress Agam Darshi and actor/writer Patricia Isaac are the brainchilds behind VISAFF. Their vision is to “bridge the gap” between South Asian talent and mainstream audiences and serve as a launching pad for integration through celebration and education. Not only will the festival incorporate feature films, shorts and documentaries, but it will also include music videos reflecting the growing independent movement of South Asian musicians from around the world representing genres of pop, rock, hip-hop, dance and more.

Here is a must-see, straight from the insiders.

KAVI

Kavi, is the 2010 Oscar nominated short film about a boy in India who wants to play cricket and go to school, but instead he’s forced to work in a brick kiln as a modern-day slave. Unsatisfied with his fate, Kavi must choose to either accept what he’s been told, or fight for a different life even if he’s unsure of the ultimate outcome.

Student Academy Award Winner, Gregg Helvey wrote, directed and produced “Kavi,” winning the 2009 Academy Award gold medal in the narrative category. Kavi was filmed entirely on location in India within seven days but took two and a half years to complete. Greg Helvey was so rattled by the thought of modern-day slavery which led him to create the 17 minute film that aims to raise awareness about this issue, which in turn would lead to action. For more info on Kavi visit http://www.kavithemovie.com/

The film festival runs on June 26 at Vancity Theatre. I am so proud to see where this non-profit volunteer run organization has come in the last six years. Never in my wildest dreams would I imagine the City of Bhangra Festival becoming the largest Bhangra Festival in North America. But indeed it has. So I encourage you all to come out and celebrate in this beautiful art form. From Salsa-infused Bhangra mash-ups to Bhangra inspired panel discussions, to free outdoor Bhangra concerts to the grand finale Coast Capital Bhangra Competition, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

City of Bhangra, North America's Largest Bhangra Festival

9 days of music, dance, and excitement from April 29 – May 8, 2010
Vancouver, BC – April 23, 2010 – Experience the sights and sounds of Bhangra when the streets come alive from April 29 – May 8 as Rogers presents the City of Bhangra Festival. The festival, organized by the Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration (VIBC) Society, encourages cultural exploration and community participation through a diverse series of events highlighting the Northern Indian art form of Bhangra.
"Each year we aim to push the boundaries about what Bhangra is and how it is performed,” says Sukhi Ghuman, Director of the VIBC Society. "This year we're celebrating our sixth year of operation. We're continuing to showcase events that bring Bhangra to an entirely new level. We’ve taken a form of dance and music created hundreds of years ago in celebration of the harvest in Punjab and brought it to Vancouver and made it accessible to people of all cultures."

Giberto Moreaux & Sal Ferreras

This year RePercussion is led by Sal Ferreras, music educator and producer who explores percussion and folk drumming, represented by a variety of cultures that make up Vancouver. I have to admit I was a little skeptical about the Olympics coming to Vancouver at first. All you would hear about was how VANOC was buying up all the marketing platforms (bus shelters, billboards, poster space) and unless you were an Olympic Sponsor you would be lucky if you could cash into the thousands coming to the city.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I don't know what it was about seeing this flame, but an overwhelming sense of pride and emotion came over me. I almost wept like a baby when I first saw it, and trust me, I don't cry easily. To think this flame has been lit since the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam and for 106 days traveled 45,000 km across Canada was astounding.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; One of the perks of working in media is that you're front and centre to where the action is taking place. Covering Olympic Celebrations sites, watching Canada win it's first gold medal and interviewing artists like Jully Black, Dan Mangan, Alex Cuba and my all time favourite King of Bhangra, Malkit Singh came with the territory.

Canada winning Gold in Mens Hockey was the icing on the cake. I'll be the first to admit, I'm not an avid hockey fan, and I nag my husband every time he puts a Canucks game on when it's not the playoff season, however this game I watched. I think everyone will remember where they were the moment Sydney Crosby shot our winning goal (mind you I had no idea who Syndey Crosby was prior to the games). After the win, like all fellow patriot Canadians, I took to the streets of downtown Vancouver, high-fiving random strangers, breaking out in Oh Canada! and smiling from ear to ear. So proud of my roots and my country for putting on an outstanding Winter Olympic Games that will go down in history, and one that I will be sure to share with my grand kids.

X-mas Faker

I will readily admit to anyone who asks I am a Christmas faker. A Christmas faker you ask? Well, that's someone who passes off their husband's homemade biscotti and short bread during the holiday season as their own. Why the need to attempt to bake? Well, I guess a few years back I got the idea of how fun it would be to bake treats for my friends. This would allow me to provide them with a packaged personal treat along with their Christmas card. I would research recipes on the net for hours, shop for all the ingredients and then spend hours in the kitchen slaving over rum balls, lemon bars, and cookies gallore.

Now if I knew my kitchen like the back of my hand, there wouldn't really be an issue, but I rarely step foot in this particular room unless it's to eat or warm up my already prepared meals. Yes, roll your eyes, I know... Eventually, I'm going to have to grow up and start cooking for myself, but guess what! I married a gourmet chef, so I got that taken care of too.

Regardless, my girl-friends and I have found a creative way to provide our holiday guests with a variety of home cooked goodies and passing them off as our own. Every year, we get together and create one or two items in mass quantities. Then we come together and distribute these goodies amongst all the participants and in the end you leave with 6 to 7 different Christmas treats. Feel free to take these to office potlucks, holiday parties and package them as a personal gifts... Less work = Less stress, which in turn means you get to enjoy the holidays.

Let's Get Married!

Jagged Edge's lyrics "Let's Get Married" has been a song I loved from the moment I heard it. However, unlike my classmates in high school I never dreamed of what my wedding would be like or what I would wear. Don't get me wrong, it's not like I didn't care, but I didn't think
wasting so much time on planning a wedding that I didn't know when was going to happen made sense. And I'm glad I stuck to my senses. In the meantime, finding a partner who would love me unconditionally, treat me like a princess (like I deserve) and continue to challenge me to be a better person was more important.

I find many girls who hit their 30's only care about getting married and have even heard outrageous stories about them meeting a guy and getting married after two dates. Two dates! Are you insane? Yes, some say when you meet "The One" you'll know, but what about developing a relationship? In this day in age, where women are pursuing their goals, focusing on their careers and becoming self-sufficient, the pressure to get married shouldn't be as prevalent... but I guess for some, their biological clocks are ticking, their ovaries are crying out and the need to please their parents is a priority.

I was lucky my parents never pressured me, and therefore I had the freedom to do as I please. I cherish the moments I spent with my girl-friends traveling in London, Spain, Italy, Greece, and Jamaica just to name a few. And without years of planning or dreaming of the perfect wedding, I truly believe I had the picture perfect wedding any girl could dream of.

2 weeks away...

Yikes! Two weeks away... You know, I think I'm doing pretty good compared to most brides two weeks before their wedding, however I have to admit, I'd be a lot more relaxed if the house renovations were completed by now. Poppa G has put his foot down on the contractors, and pretty much told them they need to get all their work done by the weekend, and if it's not finished, he's kicking them outta the house. I mean, it's been 4 weeks already and the entire family is still sharing one bathroom, our house is in disarray, and we can't prepare for the upcoming wedding festivities because the house is covered in dust with furniture stacked on top of one another. And get this, they're putting in carpet as we speak.
But there is always a silver lining. My aunt from California is on her way, and just knowing she'll be at the house to help coordinate the festivities, decorate the house, and help my Mom rearrange her house has put me at ease. Now, this television program is broadcast in over 45 different countries and we really had to think about this before allowing the camera's into our personal lives to follow us along as we plan our wedding.
I mean planning a wedding is stressful as it is, and now imagine what it would be like with a camera in your face. But since my fiance and I love the camera we couldn't resist when the opportunity came up.
So starting next week, we will begin taping with the producers of Rich Bride Poor Bride and we will also have the opportunity to work with two, yes two amazing wedding planners. Laura and Kelly have been great so far, and we know they're going to make our wedding absolutely fabulous.
With less than a month away I'm starting to get excited...

A month and a half away...

In a month and a half I will be taking the plunge and tying the knot. Now, this is an exciting time for everyone. The RSVP's are starting to come in, the vendors are confirming, you're sending off your deposit cheques and one begins to count down the days. I am defiantly going through all of those emotions, however on top of planning a 800+ planning, I'm also having to deal with the fact that my parents have decided to renovate the entire house a month and a half before the wedding.
For a matter of fact, as I type this blog I am surrounded by a thick layer of dust that has settled over my computer amongst all the contents from my kitchen. My parents had the brilliant idea upon my return from my relaxing bachelorette party in New York and Aruba that they would like to renovate. Initially, this renovation was supposed to include replacing hardwood floor in three of the rooms. However, I came home to discover that not only were the floors going to be replaced, the entire kitchen was going to be gutted along with the 3 washrooms in the house. The entrance tiles were going to be replaced with granite, the carpet was going to be replaced and the entire stair banister was going to be changed.
Now, I have to admit the construction has been going along at an amazing pace. Within two weeks, the tile in the Kitchen, 2 bathrooms and the entrance have been put down. The hardwood floor is also done... but the kitchen cabinets, washrooms and banister still need to be replaced.
At a time where I should be coming home to unwind and complete my wedding tasks, I come home to complete chaos and a kitchen that I'm not allowed to even step foot in. At a time where I want to declutter my life and prepare my big move to my in-laws, I am forced to roll with the punches and go with the flow.
I'm giving myself another two weeks. If the construction is not complete before Halloween, mark my words I will be pulling my hair out and on the verge of a mental breakdown... well probably not a mental breakdown, but you know what I mean.

Julie & Kevin

To improve my photographic skills I decided what better way to learn than to shadow a fellow photographer. This led me to contacting my dear friend Pardeep Singh. Pardeep is an amazing photographer. He aims to create unique and intimate images in a creative photo journalistic style. Pardeep's calm demeanor is also key to putting any bride or groom's nerves at ease.

I was lucky enough to act as a fly on the wall, picking up on a few new tricks of the trade. My dear friends April and Lincoln got married on May 9, 2009 in Lahaina, Maui. Lucky me I brought my SLR and was able to snap a few shots that I may be able to add to my future portfolio. The beautiful ceremony took place on a plantation overlooking the mass ocean. With palm trees swaying, ocean waves crashing and the amazing sun shining down on us, we all had the time of our lives. Congratulations Lincoln & April! Thanks for sharing your very special day with all of us.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5344303327979480834" style="DISPLAY: block; Located in Lahaina this beach front house is guaranteed to leave you with life long memories.

I had the amazing opportunity to rent this $9 Million home (yes, it's actually on the market) with a group of 11 friends during my recent visit to the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands.

We spent a week working on our tans, lounging in the 2 outdoor hot-tubs and cooking up a storm on the 2, yes 2 BBQ's. Not to mention this perfect party house is a 5 minute walk from town, has 6 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms and comfortably accommodates 12.

Who cares if it only cost us $1800 p/night. This prime private property had everything we needed at our fingertips, including the comforts of home... Who am I kidding? This is why my fiancé and I took our time and researched a lot of photographers in Metro Vancouver before booking one for our wedding. There are a number of talented photographers, however we were looking for someone who also had an amazing personality. I mean, our wedding is a huge day for both of us and we wanted to ensure not only were we comfortable with our photographer, but we also wanted to work with someone who would be willing to work with OUR creative juices.

We decided on Rupi Kambo from Studio Orange Photography. I have to admit, it was really fun having our images taken. And Yes... I know... I'm such a poser :)

Life in the Village

During my one month visit to India I had the opportunity to spend a night in the village at my aunt's house. I must say, spending time in the village is a very humbling experience and it makes one really appreciate the luxuries we have at home.

I found most village people only use the bare essentials they need to get by. For example, every morning my aunt wakes up in the morning and milks her cows. From these cows she is able to make tea for her family, butter, milk and make paneer (cheese) that she would then use for her family's dinner. When it came time to taking a bath, she heated water over a small stove outside and placed some water in bucket for me to use for my bath and another bucket of heated water would be used to wash her clothes by hand.

The electricity comes and goes on a daily basis, however these people don't seem to mind. I know when the power goes out at my house, chaos ensues and unless the electricity comes on, I can't get to work on time because I can't open my garage door, and if it's in the evening, I end up calling it a night and going to bed early.

There is a type of serenity in the village that you don't get to experience in the cities amongst all the crowed bazaars and the constant honking of horns. I guess now I understand why people like living in the Pind (village).

Until the Cows Come Home

While staying in India, I came to realize two distinct interpretations of the common saying, "Until the cows come home." For instance, you can badger with store owners until the cows come home, and you still won't get your items on time. And now to the more literal meaning of the common saying. Today I noticed a number of cows strolling in the bazaar, so I had to stop and ask my driver what the cows were doing aimlessly is a busy shopping district. To India's millions of Hindus, the cow is a holy animal that cannot be harmed. These weren't the random cows no one wants so they are set free to roam the streets until they die. My driver turned around and told me the cows were shopping too, and when it's time for them to get milked in the evening, they will make their way to their owners house and get milked... So I guess sometimes, the cows do come home.

Getting Tired

I'm starting to get a little tired of Punjab, India. I'm tired of eating roti, veggie burgers, veggie pizza and veggie chowmein. I'd be on cloud nine with just a few pieces of spicy salmon sashimi and a dragon roll.
I'm also getting tired of all the pushing and shoving. To get anything done here you gotta be aggressive and slightly rude. To get your outfits done at least two days after their original completion date, you gotta threaten them on the phone that you're leaving the country and that you want your deposit back if they don't complete your outfits the next day... and only then you might get them.
When you're at the temple and waiting to pay your respects, you're gonna get shoved and nudged by the locals who don't feel they too should wait patiently in line as everyone else. Ohhhh nooo... they gotta make it to the front and stomp on whoever they need to, to get there, and this all at a place of holy worship.
And going back to shopping... you know you're being ripped off, one for being a foreigner and second because you're too nice, so you gotta stoop to their level and bargain, threaten to leave the store, and walk out with your clothes in hand and the dollar bills you wanted to pay on their counter... This would never fly in Canada... but as I've come to learn, anything goes in India.
I'm sick of all the lieing, the cheating, the beggars, the mosquitoes and the honking horns... the journey home is going to be one long 39 hours, but I look forward to the comforts of home and the comforts of civility. 5 more days...and counting.
Nonetheless, crankiness aside, I've decided I'm going to make the most of these last few days here. I'm going to try and avoid the bazaars and concentrate on all that is beautiful.

Fatehpur Sikri - A Mughal Paradise

Emperor Akbar's crowing architechural legacy, Fatehpur Sikri was built in 1571 in honour of the famous Sufi saint, Salim Chishti. This magnificent Mughal estate was the capital for 14 years and the city itself is located in Agra. Reasons for abandoning Fatehpur Sikri still remain unclear, but many believe it may have been due to a lack of water supply.

Now when visiting Fatehpur Sikri I would recommend you negotiate a rate with a guide first. I was able to convince a guide to give me a tour of the estate for a mere 200 rupees (equivalent to $5 CAD) and this included my parking fee, my rickshaw ride up and down to Fatehpur Sikri and the entrance fee for 3 individuals. In addition to this, the English speaking guide provided us with a detailed tour and also ensured no one stole our shoes when they were left outside of the entrance.
This Mughal walled city showcases a combination of Islamic, Hindu, Jain and even Catholic inspired architecture with elegant domes and arches, reflecting Akbar's secular vision as well as his style of governance. Even today, the access to the city iis provided by a straight road Akbar built, then lined with exotic bazaars. It leads visitors through the Agra Gate to the triple-arched Naubat Khana, where the emperor's entry used to be announced.

Ever since Akbar's childlessness was ended by the remarkable prediction of Salim Chishti in 1568, the saint's tomb has become a mecca for those in search of a miricle. History states the emperor was griefstricken when his third wife died during the birth of their fourteenth child. Can you imagine having fourteen kids! Sheesh! Anyways, Shah Jahan's grief and love for Mumtaz was his inspiration for the Taj Mahal, hence the significance for love it holds today.

The Taj Mahal is open to the public Sunday through Thursday from 6am - 7pm. Get there early, as the blistering heat usually lasts between noon and 5pm. Also, take note that residents of India only pay 20 rupees entrance fee and foreigners are asked to cough-up a whopping 500 rupees each. My parents both passed as residents, but once the attendees got a look at me in my sketcher sneakers, t-shirt and Bermuda shorts I was asked to go back and pay the 500 rupees. On the bright side, you get a free bottle of water and socks to pull over your shoes when going through the Taj :)

Nonetheless, without a doubt the Taj Mahal is one of the most elegant and harmonious buildings in the world and well worth a visit. And let's not forget this momument is listed as one of the seven wonders of the world.

Yikes! Mosquitos!

Ouch! They got me again! The one thing I could do without while travelling in India is defiantly the mosquitoes. These buggers have a taste for my Canadian blood and regardless of what I do they still find a way to latch on and bite. And I'm not kidding... In one day I had over 12 bites while standing outside for a period of 10 minutes while on the phone... thanks Gurj. And don't get me wrong, I've also become accustomed to sleeping under the covers, creating a breathing hole and sweating to death under the heavy quilt... but even then the buggers find a way to get to the only flesh peeking out of the covers. I don't know how many times they may have bit my right hand, but this morning it has ballooned to double the size of my left hand. It's numb, red and blistering hot. Off Skintastic and any other mosquito repellent doesn't seem to work... now my only hope is the swelling go down in the next few hours or else I may have to go visit an Indian doctor in the village.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://sukhighuman.blogspot.com/2009/03/yikes-mosquitos.html' title='Yikes! A mission to purchase her wedding outfit, her reception outfit, her dowry clothing, jewellery to match all of her clothing in addition to a few accessories. One would think since all these Indian outfits are made in India finding what you want would only take a matter of time. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Upon entering an Indian store you are asked to take a seat. You’re not free to roam the clothing racks and shelves to look at what you might like as one would in the Western world. You are seated and a team of three men, yes men, will begin showing you clothing items one by one...

Now after seeing twenty different pieces of clothing your head begins to spin and it is at this time the salesman orders you a cup of chai, coke, sandwiches or samosas. Take advantage of this hospitality as you’ll need the time to refocus. But stay away from their water, you don’t want to get sick. As the salesmen continue to show you items that are of no interest to you for kicks, get the guys to wrap the sari’s on themselves to show you how they would look when you’re wearing one. These men can tie a sari in a matter of minutes. Next, attempt to explain to them what you’re looking for... tell them what you like about certain pieces and what you don’t like. For example, velvet embroidery is really in fashion right now, but I can’t stand it, and I made that quite clear, not to show me any items with velvet. They get the point, but sometimes it can take you up to three hours in one store to finally find something you like.

Take pictures. If you’re got magazines or images of clothing, take them with you and they may be able to help you find what you’re looking for, or recreate it from scratch. This is only worth your while if you’re in India for three weeks, as it can take up to 16 days to make a custom made outfit. To complete my wedding shopping I’ve traveled to Delhi, Ludhiana, Chandigarh, Phugwara and Barnala. And guess what? I’m still not done. I’ve placed orders for my wedding and reception outfits, in addition to my finance’s wedding outfit, my brothers’ kurtas, and ramals for the temple. I’m just crossing my fingers that they turn out the way I want. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see and have faith in the Indian retailers.

Please use Dipper at Night!

India... is a world of it's own. From the moment you step foot out of the airport, you know the comforts from home are a far off memory. Time and urgency are of little importance unless you're driving, and driving in India is terrifying. I've become accustomed to the blaring horns, the livestock on the road and the game of chicken we tend to play, but more importantly, I've realized everyone here has a purpose. From the woman who comes by and picks up your garbage every day, to the chai walla's who pour countless cups of chai a day, to the young children who latch onto you when you're shopping in the market, asking for money... everyone here is doing what they can to survive with little or no means.

Motherland... Here I Come!

Well... I've decided to do it! 26 years later, and I'm going back to the Motherland. As you can probably tell, I'm not jumping for joy. Why? Well, the toilet situation kinda makes me uncomfortable and I can't stand creepy crawly bugs. But I've decided to make the most of it and explore the rich beauty and culture India has to offer. Mission number 1: Find a Wedding Outfit, Mission number 2: Don't get sick, Mission number 3 : Take lots of pictures and enjoy every moment of it. As my Dad says, "India is what it is. Go with an open mind and you'll enjoy it." The festival, organized by the Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration (VIBC) Society, encourages cultural exploration and community participation through a diverse series of events highlighting the Northern Indian art form of Bhangra.

"Each year we aim to push the boundaries about what Bhangra is and how it is performed,” says Sukhi Ghuman, Director of the VIBC Society. "This year we're celebrating our fifth year of operation. We're continuing to showcase events that bring Bhangra to an entirely new level. We’ve taken a form of dance and music created hundreds of years ago in celebration of the harvest in Punjab and brought it to Vancouver and made it accessible to people of all cultures."

This year two events, Transfusion and rePercussion, are being co-presented by the Cultural Olympiad: TransFusion brings an eclectic blend of contemporary and traditional folk dance styles together in this unique dance production. Set in the multimedia den of light and sound, the footwork and visuals span the subcontinent of India, reaching as far north as Trinidad and Japan, blurring the borders between cultures as well as folk, classical and contemporary music and dance.

rePercussion is led by Sal Ferreras, music educator and producer who explores percussion and folk drumming, represented by of a variety of cultures that make up Vancouver. This exhibition will include performances by a number of multicultural drum troupes and Bhangra dhol drums.

The festival concludes with eight of North America’s best Bhangra teams competing for the $5000 first prize at the Coast Capital Bhangra Competition at Queen Elizabeth Theatre. International Bhangra superstars, Heera, Apna Sangeet and H-Dhami will perform.

VIBC Society
Since 2005, the not-for-profit Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration Society (VIBC) has presented events to entertain and educate all communities about Bhangra. The Society’s vision is to embrace the spirit of celebration, generosity and community that is Bhangra. The VIBC is dedicated to spreading the universal rhythm of Bhangra and welcoming people from all cultures to enjoy the beats of this beautiful art form.

For more information about the Festival, please visit http://www.vibc.org/

Why So FOLK?

The NEXT Bhangra Competition
November 10, 2008 by Sukhi Ghuman, VIBC Media and Public Relations Coordinator

This year’s NEXT Bhangra Competition brought out the best junior dance teams Metro Vancouver has ever seen. Abbotsford’s PCBCA came out on top and left with the coveted first place trophy, and both PCAC and Punjabi Folk Academy tied for second place. Congratulations to all the teams and thank you from all of us at the VIBC Society for showcasing your talents.

Both Ka Ka Canadian and Vancouver’s very own, Bombay Sapphire also gave stellar performances, but it was the Shan-E-Punjab Little Stars that stole our hearts. I'm on day 6 of my 12 day Herbal detox and I must say I'm proud for coming so for. Besides not being able to eat any dairy, carbs besides brown rice, and absolutely no wine I've been holding up fairly well. The occasional headaches from the caffeine withdrawal of my regular chai tea lattes is expected. And swallowing the 6 large pills before breakfast and dinner can be a bit much... but guess what?! Only 6 more days and I'll be toxin free.

Photography

Say Cheese! New York City, Prada and Jimmy Choos?

But most importantly, these women represent hope, faith, love and friendship that withstands all.

I too will be raising my Spankini cocktail amongst girl-friends, as we dress up as our favourite characters and watch the movie tonight... On the secluded west coast of Vancouver Island lies one of the Pacific Northwest's best kept secrets: Sooke, British Columbia.

Having taken a number of weekend getaways to Victoria, I was looking for something a little more serene. A place where I could kick off my socks, turn off my cell phone and bask in the beauty and vitality of mother nature.

As we get older, the idea of spending an evening in a cramped night club, getting drunk and being hit on by random guys tends to loose it's lustre, so a few friends and I decided to head over to the island to celebrate April Reyes 30th birthday instyle. We rented this amazing 3-bedroom house overlooking the Olympic Peninsula and set on 10 acres of private land.

No television, no emails and best of all, no neighbours. Sipping Savingion Blanc while soaking in the hot tub at the cliff's edge and being greeted by Bambi and his friends was obviously a bonus. But most importantly, I was amongst friends. We dined on great food (it helps when your boyfriend's a gourmet chef), played games, went on nature hikes, read books and enjoyed eachother's company...

Sooke, There it Is!!!
